Mapping the Alps

Art has defined our image of the Alps for a long time, and art and natural sciences have worked alongside each other in their exploration. the Alps, mountains in general, geology, snow, the forces of nature, climatic change, tourism, the sublime and the view from above have inspired art and architecture ever since. the Engadin Art Talks / E.A.T. bring together artists and architects from an international context and perspective. they will talk about their work and their research for Mapping the Alps.

Peter Zumthor, internationally known architect and creator of unique places like Therme Vals, Kunsthaus Bregenz, Diözesanmuseum Köln, talks with the art historian Philip Ursprung about his work, also in the context of Mapping the Alps.

Nairy Baghramian, who examines modernist architecture and design in her artistic practice; Jan von Brevern, who researches the geographic representation of the Alps in architecture, photography and art-theory in the 19th century; the architect Andrea Deplazes, who designed the spectacular new Monte Rosa SAC hut; the artist Hamish fulton, who crosses different landscapes for his art; Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, who creates suggestive installations on various geographic spaces; the architect Nikolaus Hirsch, who investigates institutional spaces; Sarah Morris, who explores mainly urban architecture in her films and paintings; Gianni Pettena, who creates experimental architecture and works towards an expanded notion of architecture; Walid Raad, whose artistic practice focuses on Lebanese history; the two filmmakers Ritu Sarin and tenzing Sonam, who create a cartography of tibet in their films; Kai Schlenther, who runs an architectural office in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan; the conceptual artist Lawrence Weiner, who repeatedly focused on the Engadin in his work and whose sentence STARS DON’T STAND STILL IN THE SKY FOR ANYBODY looks at the alpine sky at night; all of them will offer surprising insights and inspiring exchanges during E.A.T.
