Straddling the line between comedy and pathos, the grotesque and the beautiful, the rich pictorial inventions of the American painter George Condo (b.1957) have made him one of the most inventive artists of his generation. The sculptures, part of the
Extended Forms series of 2002, are epitomes of his work, yet being highly unusual.
Revisiting his own distinctive pictorial language, the artist, widely known for his figurative work, presents us with monumental abstract sculptures with titles such as „Gate“ or „One-armed bandit“, which function like symbols reminding us of his own oeuvre. Or should we remind ourselves of the primary meaning of abstraction, i.e. elimination of the specific, maintaining the essential and common to formulate an idea, the Extended Forms are the visualization of the idea representing George Condo’s art.
